Understanding Tarion warranty for resale homes: what you need to know

Most newly built 🏡 homes in Ontario come with a Tarion warranty that lasts up to 7 years. If you’re buying a resale home that is less than 7 years old you can get the Tarion warranty transferred to your name.

Step 1: After you take possession of your new home 📧 contact Tarion and let them know that you want your name added to the file as the new owner;

  • Call: 1-877-982-7466

  • Email: customerservice@tarion.com

It might be tempting to get this out of the way before you move but it’s best to not contact Tarion before you take possession because due to privacy laws they won’t be able to give you much information until after you close.

Step 2: You will need a couple of documents 📃 handy when you contact Tarion:

  • Agreement of Purchase and Sale

  • Transfer Deed

Step 3: Once Tarion sets up their file they will email you a confirmation and an enrollment number and a link to 🖥 “MyHome”, their online tool to manage your warranty online.
